Return to Financial Aid Overview

Professors Beck, Hansmann, Jaszczak, and Pandey

This is a major thrust area of the department and well supported by funding agencies. Applicants interested in any of the topics below are strongly encouraged to apply for graduate admission to the PhD program. Graduate students receive individual attention in a friendly environment. Post graduation job opportunities are currently good. Support for PhD students in this area normally consists of a teaching assistantship, followed by a research assistantship in the second and succeeding years (tuition included), conditional on good performance.

Research opportunities exist for:

  • Calculation of properties of atoms, including correlation and relativistic effects (Beck)
  • Global optimization techniques and simulation of biological molecules (Hansmann)
  • Atomistic Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation of surfaces and interfaces in materials (Jaszczak)
  • Electronic structure calculations of structural, electronic and optical properties of materials (Pandey)

See the individual faculty web pages for more details. For more information about this program, contact the faculty at:

Department of Physics, MTU
1400 Townsend Drive Houghton, MI 49931

To be considered for this assistantship, follow through with the application procedure to the Graduate School, where Physics Financial Aid applications may be found: Physics Graduate Program

Your interest in a research field should be mentioned in your Statement of Research Interests and Career Plans, to be included with the application. Questions about the application procedure should be addressed to the Chair of the Graduate Committee. Review of applications is ongoing and will continue until all positions are filled. MTU is an equal opportunity educational institution/equal opportunity employer.
