Surprises in Natural Graphite: Beauty from Defects

Although graphite is one of the most studied materials known, it continues to
provide scientists with new and interesting challenges. Recently, crystalline
graphite from several geological occurrences has been discovered that have
surprising and beautiful morphological features. This talk will illustrate four
recently discovered occurrences (Namibia, Ukraine, Ontario and New York) of natural graphite
showing such features, which include growth spirals, growth hillocks,
elongated crystals, hypomorphic crystals, spheres, triskelia, and cones. Crystal
defects, especially dislocations and disclinations, play a key role in the formation
of these unusual morphological features exhibited in natural graphite.
