Future Directions of Graduate Education and Research at MTU
Graduate education in the United States has been going through profound changes in recent years. While the pursuit of knowledge, teaching and learning tend to experience evolutionary development as a matter of course, what we are experiencing now is more complex than evolutionary. Rapid development of technology, especially information technology, not only makes it possible to reach everyone in the world but also compels many to stay abreast of current happenings in knowledge creation. This, in turn, put graduate education to the task of answering to the need of society. With the emergence of bewildering array of non-traditional modes of graduate education, how should MTU position itself in fulfilling the mission of post-graduate education? Strong graduate program can be sustained by vigorous scholarly effort by the faculty. Graduate education and research, that is scholarly effort, go hand-in-hand. Is research effort at MTU consistent with its aspiration for quality graduate education? I wish to report on my views on these questions and the current status of the program at MTU.
