Over the past seven years the introductory physics curriculum at the University of Illinois, taken by several thousand students per year, has been completely re-designed. We have moved from the traditional "I will talk about what I feel is important while you listen" model (dreaded by students and faculty alike) to a much more interactive approach where students, faculty, and teaching assistants work together to uncover and correct misconceptions and strengthen problem solving skills. We have developed a broad array of web-based teaching tools, instituted a successful program to improve the training and preparation of our TA's, and developed a new course to address the needs of under-prepared students. In this colloquium I will illustrate these efforts, comment on their effectiveness to date, and outline our plans for the future.
