The degree of universality of standard statistical mechanics and thermodynamics is discussed. They appear to fail whenever the system has spatial and/or temporal long-ranged interactions, multifractal structure, some types of dissipation, or other anomalies. The basic ideas as well as various illustrations in diverse areas of knowledge will be presented.
