Coronagraph / Adaptive Optics Laboratory

This laboratory is dedicated to high dynamic range imaging of the sort required to image planets around other stars. It is centered on a breadboard coronagraphic instrument which includes a simulated star and telescope. It will also contain an adaptive mirror which allows correction of the wavefront. The goal is to correct optical phase errors at the level of a few Ångstroms (one ten billionth of a meter). A correction of this order is required in order to image extrasolar planets in space with a modest sized telescope.

Also under investigation in the lab is the development of phase inversion algorithms which allow adjusting the adaptive mirror to the required level without the need for a separate optical metrology channel. Data collection will be by means of several digital cameras located throughout the breadboard including a large format, cooled camera in the final focus designed for the low light levels we will encounter.
