Graduate Programs - Physics - 2. Admission - Requirements and RecommendationsLast updated January 29, 2007 The Physics Department recommends a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) or better on a 4.0 basis. Scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required. (Physics subfield test is optional). All students should have three (3) letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf (forms available on the Procedure page). Foreign students must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam (score requirements: see English Proficiency Requirements link below). Completed applications include a statement of research interests and career plans, transcripts from all previous programs of study, and three letters of recommendation. (All items go to the Graduate School and may be sent separately.) To be assured of full consideration completed applications are due by March 1, although review is ongoing and early awards are extended as required to fill positions vacated by graduation. Due to visa changes, the recommended application deadline for foreign applicants is January 15. MTU is an EE/AA Employer. Entering students are admitted directly into the PhD program. An MS in Physics may be obtained while in pursuit of the PhD. New students are assigned to an academic advisor who will recommend courses to be taken during the first year of study. During Spring semester, students choose a research advisor who assists in planning their research program. Review the information in the following links before proceeding. They will open in a separate window.
