Fall
September 27, 2003
MUB Expo MUB Expo
The expo was held in the ballrooms of the Memorial Union Building. Once again, the Expo was extremely well attended by a record number of participants.
Physics Booth Physics Booth
The Physics booth was very popular. A number of exhibits attracted visitors, and several people from the Physics Department were on hand to answer questions about the Physics program and the physics demonstrations. In the afternoon, tours were given of the Physics Department and labs, including CONCAM, nanotechnology, and waveguide optics.
Van de Graaff Van de Graaff
The Van de Graaff generator is a fascinating demonstration involving static electricity. Demonstrations were given by Physics undergraduate Patrick Marshall and Physics Instructor Jerry Hester. The generator was used to power a spinning bottle, levitate human hair, and send pie pans flying. View a QuickTime movie of gap sparking with the generator (1.4 Mb).

Ravi Pandey with Student Physics Program
Department Chair Ravi Pandey and Assistant Professor Will Cantrell talked to prospective students about opportunities and careers in Physics. A sign-up sheet was available for the Physics Department newsletter, Event Horizon. Looping animations were displayed on the laptop, and a little pig "hologram" stole the show.
