71 Students Honored for Academics by GLIAC
Football player John van der Laan (Grand Rapids) and 71 total Michigan Tech student-athletes have been honored for their academic success by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Among them is physics major Mackenzie Brennan, from East Jordan, Michigan, competing in Men's Cross Country.

Student Achievement in TOPS
Congratulations to Erin Scanlon! Erin participated in the TOPS program at MIT this past summer as one of just 8 students invited to learn about teaching physics by hands-on experience. In the Oct. 2009 issue of Physics Today, Dr. Daniel Kleppner has a "Reference Frame" column praising the virtues of the program. You can see Erin in the photo of instructors working with students on page 8 (restricted access).

Web Page Set Up in Honor of the Late Sam Marshall
The Department of Physics has established a memorial web page for Professor Emeritus Sam Marshall, who passed away late last year. The page can be viewed at www.phy.mtu.edu/Marshall.html . Tech Hires Seven New Faculty
In its second Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative (SFHI), Michigan Tech has hired seven new faculty members to conduct research in computational discovery and innovation. They are from some of the best research universities across the country and the world and will join six departments. The new hires include Chien Wang, MIT, geological and mining engineering and sciences/physics: Chien Wang develops computer models to simulate atmospheric processes. He will start his joint appointment in geological and mining engineering and sciences and in physics in fall 2010 and plans to continue his collaborative efforts in computational simulations of the earth's climate.

Professor John Jaszczak (Physics) gave an invited lecture, "Nanotech Innovations Enterprise at Michigan Technological University," at the Symposium on Advances in Higher Education in Nanoscale Science and Engineering, held Aug. 5-8 in Albany, N.Y., and sponsored by the National Center for Learning and Teaching in Nanoscale Science and Engineering, and SUNY University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Professor John Jaszczak (Physics) presented a paper, "Nanotech Innovations: Nanotechnology Enterprise at Michigan Technological University," at the AICHE conference's session on Educational Issues in Nanotechnology held in Philadelphia on Nov. 20. Coauthors included Associate Director Mary Raber (Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies), Michael Bennett (Vassar), Assistant Professor Nassar Alaraje (Technology) and Associate Professor Paul L. Bergstrom (Electrical and Computer Engineering).

New Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative and Appointments (Mazzoleni)
Claudio Mazzoleni joins Tech from Los Alamos National Laboratory. His research focuses on air quality and climate science, including measurement and analysis of emissions from large fleets and biodiesel-powered vehicles under real-world conditions and characterization of the properties of aerosols that can affect climate. He will hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Physics.

Professor John Jaszczak (Physics) and chair Bruce Seely (Social Sciences) published a chapter, "Developing Nano Education at a Technological University: Science, Technology and Societal Implications of Nanotechnology," in the new book "Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education," edited by A. Sweeney and S. Seal, American Scientific Publishers, 2008.

Dr. Robert J. Nemiroff addressed the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York City Friday, January 2 on “Best Astronomy Pictures of the Day 2008.” The pictures were taken from the popular Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) website.
