Nanoscale science research group lead by Dr. Yoke Khin Yap (Physics) has initiated a new collaborative project with scientists in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Dr. Yap is the principle investigator of this project entitled “Growth and Characterization of Pure and Doped Boron Nitride Nanotubes”. Researchers from his group will have the access to the state-of-the-art instrumentation at CNMS at no cost in collaboration with scientists at CNMS. This is the second project lead by Dr. Yap in the CNMS User Nanoscience Research Program. His first project on “Controlling Nanostructures of CVD-Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes,” was among the first 42 research themes selected nation wide to be included as the user research program in the center and was the only selected project from the state of Michigan.
In addition, Dr. Yap was nominated as a charter member of the users' executive committee of CNMS. The next milestone task for the committee is the organization of the CNMS Users Association. Last June, Dr. Yap was invited to conduct a research seminar entitled, “Selective Growth of Pure Boron Nitride Nanotubes at Low Temperatures,” in the 2006 CNMS Inaugural User Meeting at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, held on June 14-16, 2006. His seminar is one of the four invited user talks chosen from more than hundred active user projects that were selected world wide to be included in the user research program. This user program is now consisting projects from Georgia Institute of Technology, Rice University, Stanford University, IPICYT-Mexico, University of Oxford, National Taiwan University, Cornell University, California Institute of Technology, Hewlett-Packard, etc. CNMS is one of five Nanoscale Science Research Centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
