For the first short paper for this class, we ask you to answer following questions. They are designed to provide us with some sense of who you are and of your interests. There are no right or wrong answers here. We will use this information to help plan out aspects of the course. Before answering, you should read the first two chapters in the Ratner book, and also look over a brochure on the NSF website, “Shaping the World, Atom by Atom.” It can be found at the following URL:

Please write clearly – all written communication should be in good English prose, without misspellings and grammatical errors. (In other words, take a minute and proof read your paper before you turn it in.)

Value: 5% of course grade (short paper)
