1d60.30: MONKEY AND HUNTER

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the independence of horizontal and vertical components of motion in a dramatic way.

DESCRIPTION: The "gun" is aimed at the monkey (ball) and shot. As the projectile leaves the muzzle of the gun it breaks a circuit producing the magnetic field which holds the monkey (ball) in place. The monkey then begins to fall at the same time the projectile is fired directly at the monkey. Due to independence of horizontal and vertical components of motion, the projectile will strike the monkey.

SUGGESTIONS: Best for rooms 135 and 139, Need approximately 5 - 8 meters range and 3 - 5 meters height. This demo takes lots of setup time. It is very important to get the gun aimed at the monkey (ball) and then the gun and monkey kept in the same geometry prior to the demo.

EQUIPMENT: Monkey and hunter assembly, as photographed or the table version.

SETUP TIME: 10 Min.
