PURPOSE: To illustrate forces produced by the pressure drop when steam condenses into water.

DESCRIPTION: Water is headted in the steam generator to a rolling boil. The turkey baster is used to put at least 2 tubes full of boiling water into the the lid quickly screwed tightly thereon. Within a few seconds the steam begins empty milk jug. Place the cover on the jug. Shake the jug a few times to heat up the inside of the jog. Very quickly the jug is placed into ice water to cool. This causes the steam to condense inside the jug, creating a low pressure inside. The greater atmospheric pressure outside crushes the milk jug.

SUGGESTIONS: Wear protective gloves to protect yourself from the hot water.

EQUIPMENT: Steam generator, empty milk jug, turkey baster, ice water, and gloves.
