4C31.30: DRINKING BIRD

PURPOSE: To stimulate thought about heat exchange and liquid-vapor phase transitions.

DESCRIPTION: The bird's head and beak are initially wetted, and the bird positioned so that its beak will dip into the water cup when it tips. The bird will keep on drinking and dipping his beak in the water. If you replace the water with a small beaker of alcohol the bird will drink faster due the lower vapor point of alchohol.

SUGGESTIONS: Unlike the picture our bird is made of glass. Be careful that the bird does not tip over backwards and break its head. This is a problem when using alcohol.

EQUIPMENT: Drinking bird with water cups, and a small beaker of alcohol.

SETUP TIME: 30 min.
