PARALLEL LR CIRCUIT: BURNT BULB

PURPOSE: To demonstrate what happens when in a parallel LR circuit when the field is colapsed around a inductor.

DESCRIPTION: A 12 VDC light bulb is hooked up in parallel with the Thompson coil. The core on the Thompson coil is pushed all the way into coil. The circuit is powered by three 6 volt batteries hooked up in series. A switch turns on the light bulb. When the switch is opened the field around the inductor colapses inducing a large voltage into the circuit for a short period of time. This causes the light bulb to brightly flash.

SUGGESTIONS:

EQUIPMENT: Thompson coil with core pushed in,switch, 12 VDC light bulb, a 3 six volt batteries, wires

SETUP TIME: 30 min.
