The southern coast southwest of Melbourne is called the Shipwreck Coast.
Sailing ships from England coming around the tip of Africa had to navigate between Australia and Tasmania and avoid nearby islands.
If they missed the safe passage, they encountered submerged hazards or were blown into the rocks on the coast.
Hundreds of ships with all aboard were lost in this region.

This island used to be connected to the mainland on the left.
About ten years ago, the connecting rock bridge collapsed trapping a car and two picnickers.

Famous inlet where the only survivors of a shipwreck (a cabin boy and a lady) came ashore on the sand beach.
He climbed the cliff face and walked many miles to a house to get her rescued.

A neighboring inlet. Most inlets do not have beaches at high tide or climbable walls.
Note the natural caves in both inlets.
