Uluru (the Aboriginal name), which is a World Heritage Site, was originally called Ayres Rock.
It is located near the geographical center of Australia in the "outback".
While it is a desert region, they were having near-record rainfall this year.
Before (left) and after (right) sunset. It was cloudy and we were not sure we would see the sun on the rock.
The setting sun appeared under the clouds.
The effects of erosion on the rock.
It was these features plus the water that could be found around the base of the rock that made it sacred to the Aboriginies.
Aboriginal art in openings in the rock.
Our attempts to see the sunrise on the rock were foiled by the clouds.
