Change laboratory prerequisite (PH1100) to lab corequisite (PH1111)
Adjust math prerequisites for elimination of MAT courses
PH1110 College Physics I ... (3,0,0) f, s ... 3 Cr
An overview of basic principles of kinematics, dynamics, elasticity,
fluids, heat, thermodynamics, mechanical waves, and interference
and diffraction of mechanical waves.
Prerequisite:
MA1031 or MA1032
Corequisite: PH1111
Add additional alternate prerequisite (PH1111)
PH1200 Physics by Inquiry II ... (0,0,2) f, s, su ... 1 Cr
Experiments covering Coulomb's law, electric and magnetic fields, circuits,
induction, and geometric optics are explored through guided construction. The course
emplasizes understanding physical concepts through inquiry and the scientific method.
Prerequisite: PH1100 or PH1111
or PH1161
Change name from "Geometrical and Physical Optics" and reduced credits to 3
PH3210 Optics ... (2-0-3) f ... 3 Cr
An introduction to geometrical and physical optics. Topics in geometrical
optics include ray analysis of mirrors, lenses, prisms, and optical systems.
Topics in physical optics include polarization, interference, interferometry,
and diffraction. The laboratory explores optics through exeriments in
imaging, fiber optics, interferometry, diffraction, polarization and
laser beam propagation.
Prerequisite: PH2400
Corequisite:
MA3530
Change semester offered from fall
PH3410 Quantum Physics I ... (3-0-0) s ... 3 Cr
An introduction to the foundations of modern physics and Schrödinger's
wave mechanics. Topics include thermal radiation, particle-like
properties of radiation, Bohr's model of the atom, matter waves,
Schrödinger's wave mechanics, quantization of angular momentum, and the
one-electron atom.
Prerequisites:
PH2400 and
MA3530
Change semester offered from spring
PH3411 Quantum Physics II ... (3-0-0) f ... 3 Cr
A continuation of PH3410 including the study of spin and magnetic
interactions, multi-electron atoms, quantum statistics, molecules,
solids, and elementary particles.
Prerequisite:
PH3410.
Change to alternate year offering starting in spring 2007
PH5211 Electrodynamics II ... (2-0-0) s (alternate years) ... 2 Cr
Scattering and diffraction, special relativity, relativistic particle
dynamics, Lorenz transformation, 4-vectors, transformation of fields,
charges and currents, Thomas precession, retarded potentials, radiation
from moving charges.
