Recitations: Ken Morgen

Text: Modern Physics, 2nd ed., by Serway, Moses and Moyer (including MP DESKTOP software).

Lectures: Attendance is expected at all lectures, which meet in Fisher Hall 139. Students are responsible for all material covered in class, in the reading assignments as listed below, and for other course related information that may be given during lectures. It is highly recommended that you read the assigned sections before each lecture.

Effort, recitations, and homework: Modern physics is very interesting and can be great fun- but it also can be conceptually challenging. It is recommended that you spend at least two hours of study for each hour spent in class. Attendance in recitations is expected. It is extremely important that you try to work all of the indicated problems before the recitation they are scheduled to be reviewed. Recitation grades will be assigned by the recitation instructor. Click here for problem and reading assignments.

Computer Labs: There will be three computer laboratory assignments. The MP Desktop software is included with the textbook. You are expected to install and use the software on your own PC, on a PC in a computer lab on campus, or you may use a PC available in the Physics Dept. There is a penalty for handing in labs late.

Exams: Two one-hour evening exams and a two-hour comprehensive final exam will be given at the times scheduled on the assignment sheet. Exam problems will be similar to those on the homework and quizzes. Length of the exams will be appropriate to the allotted time (provided you are prepared!). All of your work will be carefully examined for full or partial credit, so all work must be shown neatly and logically. Answers without supporting work will be considered incorrect. Equation sheets will be provided on all exams, and also will be passed out on the first day of class- practice using them as you work homework problems.

Grades: Grades for the course will be based on each segment of the course according to the following weights:

Scaled scores for each segment of the course and the final letter grade will be made according the following guidelines:

Except for minor scaling adjustments, there will be no major curving to adjust grades.
